About NPIA Inc.
Offering a versatile suite of insurance solutions for a complex market.
With specialized expertise as a third-party administrator, managing general agent, commercial independent insurance agency and captive manager, NPIA, Inc. delivers the precise, compliant insurance solution your organization needs.
-
We serve as both a third‑party administrator and managing general agent, providing administrative, claims and underwriting oversight for insurance programs. Our role is rooted in consistency, clarity and responsible management — supporting programs as they operate and mature while strengthening the communities they were created to serve.
-
We are a commercial, independent insurance agency specializing in nonprofit organizations. We understand the unique missions, governance structures and financial constraints nonprofits face, and we tailor insurance strategies to protect people, assets and programs without distracting from purpose. Our approach is consultative and relationship‑driven — helping nonprofits identify risks, strengthen resilience and build coverage solutions that support long‑term sustainability.
-
We serve as a captive manager by providing access to protected cells within an established captive structure. Rather than forming new captives, we offer nonprofits and mission‑driven organizations a cost‑effective way to participate in a captive environment with professional management, regulatory support and ongoing administration.
Our mission
The mission of NPIA, Inc. is to develop, manage and administer self-insurance programs with superior service and minimal cost, while representing 501c3 nonprofit organizations.
Our team
At NPIA, trustworthiness and integrity guide everything we do — because we know exceptional ideas are driven by exceptional people.

Our History
1990: Minnesota nonprofits often face limited workers’ compensation insurance options, excessive premiums and poor claim services.
1993: Mike Freundschuh founds Nonprofits’ Insurance Agency (NPIA), focusing on the insurance needs of 501(c)(3) organizations.
1995: NPIA assembles five member organizations and is formally approved to provide workers’ compensation insurance under MN statute. These organizations form a Fund that will eventually become Nonprofit Insurance Trust (NIT).
2002: NPIA hires its first official employee, Wayne Freundschuh, to operate the Fund for the founding nonprofit members.
2010: NPIA brought together an inaugural group of 14 member organizations to transition from a traditional fund to the Nonprofit Insurance Trust, granting statutory insurance governing authority under Minnesota law and launching a dedicated workers’ compensation pool.
2011: NPIA forms the NIT Property & Liability Pool, expanding insurance coverage for all members.
2014: NPIA becomes a licensed insurance Third-Party Administrator and is approved to manage all administrative duties of NIT, saving NIT members millions in annual administrative fees.
2018: NPIA expands nonprofit insurance coverage to North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and non-NIT members in Minnesota through the founding of NP Insurance Group, LLC.
"NPIA was formed with two founding principles:
1) Provide maximum protection at the least cost to our clients.
2) Treat employees with the utmost fairness and respect."
NPIA Founder,
Mike Freundschuh
